THE MAHARAJA

Models have always been a good barometer of fashion. It stands to reason that these youngsters who spend their days in ateliers and runways would pick up the nuts and bolts of the business of fashion. But here is the question: does that experience, coupled with being a famous face, help a model become a successful fashion designer? Apparently, it does. Former StyleSkool models, Jaipur-based Akshaye Rathore and Vishwaraj Lavera, recently launched a clothing and accessories label which is garnering attention. In conversation with the duo.

''Indian models are representing our country in pageants and walking for fashion weeks overseas. If you're really really on your 'A' game, you'll go places. Having said that, I personally feel that modelling is not a long-term stable profession because there are new faces every day, and sooner or later, they'll replace the models who are doing well today. Considering that, models must have a back-up plan so they can diversify into a more stable career'' Akshay tells me. On a serious note, he muses, ''If models diversify into another career it's usually acting. However I've always wanted to launch my own label… I love designing clothes and accessories! Vishwaraj and I were getting innumerable e-mails and texts from youngsters, asking where we buy clothes and how we style our look. Most youngsters are on a budget and can't afford luxury labels so we decided to give them our pick from both affordable and expensive brands and this eventually developed into plans for launching our own label — 'The Maharaja: Made For Royalty'. My modelling experience has undoubtedly been a pillar of support because I learnt how it works and what's trending in fashion. Today, we are reaching out to youngsters, be it aspiring models or college students, who want to make a style statement, regardless of budget.''

Vishwaraj adds, ''If we are honest, then we just know that modelling is just a short-term career. We will be in the buzz but but not for the long run  because there are fresh faces each day! The competition is tough and you just have to be prepared for the next innings. That's how showbiz works!! Akshay and I are like brothers; since I began modelling, he has been with me, and after a lot of brainstorming we decided to launch a label together. I am so glad we took this decision!! I love designing; although I dont have professional experience, I have designed for my family and friends and now I am really thrilled that I can transform my passion into my profession.''
