THE HISTORY OF 'MARGARITA'

Cheers to the golden era of the cocktail... lets take a peek at those who invented the flavor and fun of our favorite cocktails... a decade ago!

The Margarita first appeared around 1950. A recipe for a cocktail called 'Picador' had already been published in London in 1937 with three ingredients: tequila, lime and Cointreau. in 1948, Margaret Sames (nicknamed Margarita) organised a New Year's Eve party in Acapulco and decided to impress her guests with a thirst-quenching creative cocktail with salt on the rim of the glass. The new cocktail was named in her honour and distinguished guests like John Wayne and Lana Turner went back with the recipe to Hollywood where they spread it among their friends. The recipe was published in California in 1952 and in New York in 1953. The name 'Margarita' could also have been inspired by 'Tequila Daisy' that was the most popular tequila-based cocktail in Mexico! Tequila Daisy is similar to Fizz or Collins and Daisy translates as 'marguerite' in French and 'margarita' in Spanish. Cheers!
