SHRUTI SANCHETI WINTER FESTIVE 2015

Taking inspiration from the spiritual centres of India and Japan i.e. Kaashi and Kyoto, Shruti Sancheti's show at Lakme Fashion Week is about individuality and the global village. Steeped in spiritualism—her collection can be coined as classic, polished, urban Indian.

"As a part of 'Reinvent Banaras' — an endeavour by the Prime Minister to emulate the revival of culture, conservation of heritage and the infrastructure of Kyoto in Kaashi — Japanese and Buddhist influence seen on the Ghats of Benares has inspired our collection. I aspire to revive the glory of ancient Banarasi weaving in a contemporary style, an example of which is silver, yellow gold and rose gold minimalist thread worked flora and fauna motifs…" reveals the designer. I have always admired how Shruti Sancheti is a ambassador not just for her country but also for its traditions, employing only those people whose handwork is native to the region. Look out for midis, long shirt dresses, capes and jackets teamed with ghagras, wide pleated pants and kimono tops crafted from brocades, gicha silk, Bengal dupion and chanderi—with surface ornamentation like dori, resham, Boro embroidery from Japan and gold printing. "The splendour of our weaves should not be limited indigenously but proliferate worldwide thus a conscious effort has been taken to give it an International look—with a traditional soul" she says. I can't wait to see it unfold on the runway!
