SHRUTI SANCHETI BLOGS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF COTTON

Designer Shruti Sancheti built her label by resolutely working to revive Indian weaves—without sacrificing elegance for sustainability. Here she speaks on the importance of cotton.

India is a country which has ten months of summer so cotton in its most basic form is the ideal fabric for our climate. Besides, as a brand, I practice restraint and understated luxury and always believe in the purity of natural fabrics so cotton fits perfectly with my design philosophy. Cotton is also most cost effective and easy to maintain so it is an ideal base fabric for prêt collections. I have used cotton in various forms ranging from untreated calico cottons to 200-thread count finely woven cotton according to the desired look and drape and fall of the outfit.

Cotton has found its way in both summer and winter collections and is versatile and multipurpose. I am on the Board of Maharashtra State Handloom Corporation and have got special cotton with better thread counts woven for my various collections with different woven patterns and colors. I have, in fact, even done a collection based on the Indian freedom movement crafted with Khadi titled "Swadeshi" last year so cotton is an integral part in my scheme of things. Designers worldwide use cotton especially Egyptian and Swiss cotton. The idea is to wisely choose the right kind and right blend for the outfit and it is really nice to observe designers creating and patronizing cotton in their collections. I strongly believe in eco-friendly and environment-friendly fabrics and as responsible citizens of the globe we must do our bit. Personally the purity of natural fabrics is extremely appealing. We must purchase these fabrics to preserve and conserve the environment.
