PROFESSOR PAOLO CASTAGNETTI ON INDIAN STUDENTS

Paolo Castagnetti is a professor at The School of Fashion and Design in Politecnico di Milano and a renowned architect working with Italian and international groups in the field of design and architecture (Intercontinental Hotels Group and Autorgrill among others). He specializes in architecture, interior design and design in the field of hospitality tourism and wellness. Paolo joined The GD Goenka University to share his experience on developing an individual process in designing.

"I was with GD Goenka last year doing the road show in Lucknow. On that occasion I met some of the most wonderful people involved in this important project involving two universities: GD Goenka University and Politecnico di Milano. They asked me if I was interested in continuing with this experience and bringing my practical and theoretical knowledge to first year students and I accepted with enthusiasm. In fact I think that teaching--specially to other cultures--is something that always improves skills as long as you share with other people part of your "secret" knowledge. Finally even knowing that the students would be young and culturally different.. I did not divert owing to the desire to put myself and them to the test.

I wanted to deal with the students directly on the issues of design languages and the concept of space and context.. trying to continuously run with new keywords so that each of them could capture their own. Theoretical lectures enriched by images along with real-world examples and concepts and a few links to conceptual art have enabled them to deepen their knowledge through two practical exercises. The first was an individual experience which was exclusively conceptual and the second was most concrete and in groups of four or five students involving different specializations (interior design and fashion design.. communication and product design). Recognizing the potential of the design and to express it in their own language is not easy for students. But it was my intention to give them the basis for applications for their future projects. So I worked closely with the teachers of The GD Goenka University who were all very competent and together we got unexpected results by the enthusiasm and intelligence of a majority of students within six months of their course!

I must admit here that I was lucky in several aspects like involvement in the fest of the institute "Acceleraton" which ran parallel to my course taking shape. The name coins perfectly -- in my opinion -- for The GD Goenka University to think and plan for the future. The students involvement in the fest at different levels and their artistic attitude amazed me. We have nothing like it in Italy and I think it is something exceptional from which to take inspiration. It has been a brilliant experience for me that I believe has enriched both sides and which I hope to repeat soon!"
