LFW GEN NEXT DESIGNER STANZIN PALMO

— JASMEEN DUGAL

Lakmé Fashion Week is acclaimed on the global fashion landscape as the space where young, fresh talent is given a platform. Each season, there is stringent selection by LFW Advisory Board following which handpicked designers get an opportunity to showcase. In conversation with one of the six designers, Stanzin Palmo whose collection will pay homage to Ladakh.

''When I first heard I had been selected as part of the Gen Next Programme and would be showcasing my collection at Lakmé Fashion Week, it was a dream come true. I was completely baffled and couldn't believe it! It was a beautiful moment that I wish I could bring back… The Gen Next Programme is pivotal for an upcoming designer. And, for me, this opportunity is as though my label now has a voice. Everyone looks out for upcoming designers to see what we bring to the table so it is very crucial to prove myself and do justice to this invaluable opportunity. The programme is so well directed — since the time I've been selected, it has turned everything around and I can't wait to see what is in store for me. Truly I'm lucky to be a part of this prestigious platform.

From a business viewpoint, I want to expand my label Zilzom into multi-brand stores; right now it is just confined to Ladakh. I want my creativity to be shared and worn by people who appreciate it. Lakmé Fashion Week will give me and my label exposure and help me reach the right clientele. Speaking of the show, the theatrical element and the retail immediacy are equally important for me. The runway is a window to retail. For the label to sustain itself, retail exposure is equally crucial. In the long run, though, retail immediacy will prove to be more important as it is sales that will keep the business running. That said, my collection is steeped in the natural beauty of Ladakh. Since Ladakh is a cold desert, the plants that grow here are exclusive to the region. In particular, I was inspired by Apricot Blossom and Sea Buckthorn. The structure, colours and exclusivity blew my mind. First, I made a rough sketch and then added an Oriental touch to the detailing. Once I was certain about the design, I translated it through digital art and thread work onto Ladakh handmade pashmina, Ladakh wool, silk, cotton linen and rayon. The silhouettes take inspiration from Ladakhi traditional dress Goncha where the gathers and the wrap command centerstage.

Well, the countdown has begun!! During the five days of Lakmé Fashion Week, my survival kit would include me being completely absorbed in the event, both mentally and physically. I want to attend shows by the established designers and learn from them. This platform will have all the creative energy under one roof and there's so much to learn, as an emerging designer. Being able to communicate, explain and execute my work will be of utmost importance for me.''
