IN CONVERSATION WITH TALENT FACTORY CEO SANJAY NIGAM

JASMEEN DUGAL  (click here to know more about this blogger)

Bombay Times Fashion Week. Bangalore Times Fashion Week. Delhi Times Fashion Week. Star-wattage properties poised to grow stronger with each season. The man spearheading this nationwide Fashion showcase, Talent Factory CEO Sanjay Nigam, is widely credited with organising this powerful platform for lesser known talent to showcase alongside veteran designers and with adding new cities to its show portfolio so mainstream Fashion can filter into the smaller towns. In conversation with the visionary.

Let's look into the history of this pioneering showcase in association with Times Group—across the length and breadth of India. What was the first moment when you knew you wanted to produce a fashion week? Why?

It has been more than a decade since I have been associated with fashion properties in some capacity and these were the times that enhanced my understanding of the Fashion industry at large. My association and long discussions with fashion stalwarts and industry experts made me realise that there is a large vacuum between the established couturiers and the young aspiring talent. Another important thing I was shocked to perceive was that the so-called fashionistas of tier-two cities had no clue about the young talent that was making waves Internationally and therefore back home they had hardly any takers. These were the days when the Times management approached us to produce an event that was on similar lines… and rest, as they say, is history.

India Showcase Week and Times Fashion Week is the first of its kind. Do share your vision for these properties. What makes this different from the other fashion weeks popping up all over?

Yes! As you rightly said, our fashion weeks are unique and first of its kind. This is because we believe in bringing forward the talent and creativity of lesser known names; the focus is primarily on aspiring names. The main idea behind Times Fashion Week is marketing-driven so focus is on building new designers as brands. Therefore we do a lot of advertising on the digital and social media space.

From experience... why do you feel each key city deserves its own fashion week?

Simple — every city in India has immense talent that needs to be showcased on big platforms. Another important thing that I always say is that Fashion is no more a privilege that people in metros enjoy; so our fashion weeks showcase trends and designs to a larger audience.

What is the criterion in selecting participating designers for the shows in each city?

Only one criteria, Creativity with the right design aesthetics.

What are three tips you can give designers about getting maximum benefit? What should they focus on?

I feel upcoming designers should focus on creativity, originality and they should be visionary in their thought process.

What have you enjoyed most whilst organising it?

The mess around it!

Do tell us about difficult situations you may have faced and how you got out of it in previous editions?

[Smiles] If you allow then I will like to skip this one because I never look back; the tough times made me learn new lessons. Establishing a fashion property of this magnitude was never easy because there are still people who are self proclaimed Gods of the Fashion industry and they bring hundreds of obstacles in our path! But when you have the right vision and sincerity, you always defeat your opponents!

What are the three attributes a fashion week producer should have?

Creativity, Vision and Calmness

The day of the shows your survival kit will definitely include…

My smile!

Sanjay... how would you describe your own personal style?

I believe in wearing garments that are comfortable and yet fashionable so that it catches the eye!
