IN CONVERSATION WITH SALIM ASGARALLY

JASMEEN DUGAL  (click here to know more about this blogger)

Having trained at Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, LA and University of California, Salim Asgarally's ensembles are worn by Brad Pitt and Madonna, Bipasha Basu and Aishwarya Rai  Bachchan. Today, he has launched 'Innovative Ideas Inked' which aspires to inculcate students of fashion design, from rural and urban India, with the requisite skill set, networking and expert guidance so that Indian Fashion as a whole can carve a niche on the world fashion map. In conversation with him.

What sequence of thoughts or events inspired 'Innovative Ideas Inked'?

'Salim Asgarally', the label, has completed 25 years in Fashion. I've seen the Indian fashion industry grow from infancy to where it is today, and have an in-depth perspective of how the trade functions along with a wide network of fashion professionals and specialists. Over the years, I've mentored fashion students and understand the dire need to integrate emerging talent with expertise and opportunity if indian Fashion has to make a mark on an International level. This train of thought led to the birth of 'Innovative Ideas Inked' — a platform that aspires to bring together skilled resources and channel them in a direction of productive growth.

What is its core vision?

'Innovative Ideas Inked' fulfils need gap of the skill-based industry and the requirement to spark a revolution amongst gen next to 'Think, Understand, Create' rather than 'Just Do It'. We want to create a platform for the next generations in both urban and rural India, so they can think beyond the obvious, as they are expected to in schools and colleges. To encourage youngsters to explore their talent and cultivate it with the right skill set to enhance it. Innovative Ideas Inked aspires to be a game changer in the field of vocational educational space and help revitalise and contribute to the success story called INDIA. We will be rolling out with a series of workshops across the nation.

Do share details on the workshops, its goal and what you hope to achieve?

Design Express is a ten-day workshop meant for whosoever is aspiring to pursue a career in Fashion. It will be packed with interactive training, coaching and mentoring to gear up the students for a career in Fashion. The workshop will also provide a 360-Degree perspective on the functioning of the fashion trade and assess where your aptitude in design lies. I will be Chief Mentor of the program and the workshop would be a meeting ground for some of India's top fashion designers, stylists, bloggers, entrepreneurs, mentors and influencers in the fashion trade.

Do you perceive this initiative snowballing into a global conversation?

A good idea always leads to a great outcome. We believe it is only through interaction, integration and assimilation of talent that we will be able to unearth the true sensibility of Indian fashion, so as to enable it to establish its identity on the world stage. Indian culture is embedded in rural India, which is what we would like to bring into mainstream fashion. Eventually, I'd like to see fashion become a tool of empowerment rather than simply preoccupation of the rich and famous. Fashion must be for all, not just a select few who already have access to networks and resources, only then will it become a movement that will speak a new story strong enough to captivate the world.
