IN CONVERSATION WITH PALLAV OJHA

— Jasmeen Dugal

India Beach Fashion Week is influenced by the beachside glamour that is a part and parcel of Goa — and grows stronger with each season. This season, IBFW will witness both A-List designers and creative, young designers showcasing resort and beach wear over the three-day fashion festival with buyers, fashion-conscious social set and celebrities. In conversation with co-founder and CEO Pallav Ojha in the run-up to Season 5 of the destination fashion platform to be held at Goa Marriott Resort and Spa on 26-27-28 October.

Let's look into the history of the beach and resort fashion week. What was the first moment when you knew you wanted to produce IBFW? How did it happen?

India Beach Fashion Week is born out of the need for an open platform for the fashion industry. We do not restrict participation to a select set of people who one will bump into at every other fashion week; we reach out to a community at large that believes in living inspired. The resort wear market in India is burgeoning and evolving and IBFW is the only destination fashion platform in the country.

India Beach Fashion Week is the first of its kind. Do share with us your vision for this edition of the event. What will make this edition different?

IBFW has evolved as the only fashion festival in the country. This living inspired experience attracts people from all over the country. All of them converge in Goa over fashion business and entertainment. Our buyer and designer coordination programme is a pretty serious one and we go that extra mile to deliver value to showcasing designers. IBFW Fall Winter 2017, Season 5 is poised to be really strong in terms of the runway content. The production quality of the runway shows is top notch this time. This season will also feature a lot of entertainment for audiences through the newly launched IBFW Passport — a passport for many great experiences! This season will also feature a live festival stage with a line up of artists who will add to the vibe at the beach-facing venue — Goa Marriott Resort and Spa.

From experience... why do you feel the region of Goa deserves its own fashion week?

IBFW is a national IP. There are pre on-ground events leading to the main festival in Goa. The IBFW Model Audition is where we hunt for the best beach body. The shortlisted talent gets an opportunity to walk the runway for key designers. We also do a preview tour in multiple cities where our brands and sponsors engage with audiences. And then all of this leads to the three-day IBFW Festival in Goa to be held 26-27-28 October 2017. Goa is the DNA of IBFW. It is an International destination where people from all over the world converge. That means we are talking about different cultures, tastes and aspirations. So it is natural that an International destination like Goa ought to become a global fashion destination.

What was the criterion in selecting participating designers for the shows in this edition?

Good, credible work and strong foresight towards adding value to the industry.

What are three tips you can give designers about getting maximum benefit from India Beach Fashion Week? What should they focus on?

1) Great Collection

2) Good Presentation

3) Being Media Savvy

What have you enjoyed most whilst organising IBFW?

Learning about various challenges and overcoming them. And also maintaining relevance with the industry.

Do tell us about a difficult situation you have faced and how you got out of it in the previous editions?

There are many challenges we have faced as a platform. Technical, creative, logistical, financial. But I think it takes patience and team work to overcome challenges. My mantra is to not try and control a situation that you cannot actually control. The idea is to be aware of things and go with the flow and you will see the right path opening up for you.

What are three attributes a fashion week producer should have?

1) Courage

2) Patience

3) The ability to lead

The day of the shows your survival kit will definitely include…

1) Lots of Water

2) A very dependable team

3) Patience

Which catwalk show are you most looking forward to and why?

The emerging talents and the Grand Finale of course!
