India Luxury Style Week Men's Edition runs from 26—30 April with some of the best designers from across the nation and overseas showcasing the hottest looks in menswear. Since it’s the sole pioneering mens showcase in India there’s much excitement in the fraternity and fashion conscious set to see what it has in store for us. Curator and Managing Director of ILSW Men's Edition Ramesh Dembla is pushing the industry forward in exciting ways so I thought it would be great to chat with him about the menswear landscape, what we can expect at the five-day showcase in Bengaluru and some pretty solid advice to make sure you stay stylish at all times! In conversation.
Ramesh you are the curator of the only men's fashion showcase in India. How is men's fashion fundamentally different in India as compared to the rest of the world?
We are lucky to have such a strong cultural background. It gives us liberty to experiment with colours and silhouettes much more comfortably than the rest of the world.
Do you feel the Indian male mindset is evolving and menswear is more center-stage than past seasons? What is the primary influence?
Thanks to the Internet generation, global exposure to the world of Fashion is a primary influence. People look at runway shows and fashion bloggers everywhere, everyday and somewhere it changes the way you start dressing.
What are you most looking forward to about India Luxury Style Week Men's Edition this season? Do you feel it is educating the urban Indian man about Fashion and broadening their mindset?
I am looking forward to greater exposure for menswear. If there is anything I can do to lend a hand in educating people and introducing them to the love of Fashion, I will do it.
The men's industry is a rapidly growing market worldwide. What do you think the future holds for menswear in India?
The Fashion industry has always been pretty woman-centric. I want to do my bit in bringing men on the head ramp now!
Ramesh what have you enjoyed most whilst curating India Luxury Style Week Men's Edition?
Honestly, the happiest memory was after the first edition of India Luxury Style Week Men's Edition got over and I received an overwhelming response from my friends and well wishers across the nation. It feels good to be appreciated for all of my sweat, blood and tears.
What was the criterion in selecting participating designers?
Honestly, I am looking for pure talent and not a designer who has been there for years, a big name! This is a platform for people who are willing to innovate themselves and are ready for challenges in bringing something new on the ramp!
What tips would you like to share with participating designers to leverage maximum benefit from India Luxury Style Week Men's Edition? What should they focus on?
Since we are still in the initial stage, we are concentrating more on making a buzz in the Fashion industry. So I want the designers to show us who they are and not put on a face for the world. We love them for their individuality and I hope they stay true to their brand. Nothing beats the quality of pure honesty.
Do tell us about the event format. What makes India Luxury Style Week Men's Edition special and unique for both participants and guests this season?
The USP is that this is the only men's fashion week in India so designers look forward showcasing their best and guests are always curious about how different and stylish menswear can look… a counterpoint to just sherwanis and suits.
What's the next big thing in men's fashion? Do share three men's trends you foresee will be 'big' this season?
I have never been the kind to follow trends and I think everybody should break free from these rules. Be ridiculous! Be adventurous! Your clothes are the easiest way for you to be creative!!
It's going to be very busy for you because you're going to be pulled in so many directions. So what does your survival kit for India Luxury Style Week Men's Edition include...?
Faith in God and my passion for ILSW. That is enough to keep me going for miles.
On a personal note what is your personal style?
Personally, I hate formal suit and tie. You will mostly see me chilling in jeans and a comfortable tee. I love wearing boots and throw on an interesting scarf to add an element of fun to the look.
And on a parting note... who are your male fashion icons?
Akshay Kumar, undoubtedly. He has always been so comfortably suave with his taste. There is something in him every boy in the country can learn!!
