IN CONVERSATION WITH ARADHANA JAGOTA

— EXPLOSIVE FASHION

A simple story of a schoolgirl who nursed a dream of joining the world of films one day… and worked towards it with tunnel-vision focus. Post-graduation she landed a role in blockbuster television sees ''24'' and is now basking in the glow of her film ''Kerry On Kutton''. In conversation with Aradhana Jagota.

''I had an inclination towards acting since my schooldays. I still remember that I acted in a school play in 11th standard and after I delivered my monologue, quite a few people in the audience started clapping. That was the moment when I knew that this is what I want to do in life! Since modelling and acting go hand in hand I started modelling while I was in college — until I graduated in mass communication from Asian School of Media Studies. Yes I considered copywriting as a career option as I have a flair for writing but that was a back up plan.

My most memorable modelling assignment was a Kurkure advertisement with Juhi Chawla which also happens to be my first modelling assignment ever. It was a two-day shoot on the outskirts of Delhi and I felt like I was on a picnic. Another one that I can recall right now is a travel show where we were shooting in Israel. Being a travel addict I really enjoyed that experience. Modelling aside, acting was always a part of the plan. That's why I shifted my base to Mumbai after I completed my graduation so that I could pursue acting. I was very serious about a career in acting and enrolled myself in Anupam Kher's acting classes to polish my skill set. The acting assignment where I felt myself evolve as an actor was television series '24'. I try to portray my character as authentic and somewhere down the line my performance got noticed.

The film 'Kerry on Kutton' is a different story altogether. When I was in second year college, and modeling on the side, Ashok (my director) was a senior studying cinema in the same college. So, when he was making his student film, he asked me if I would like to act. We did a rehearsal and script reading but he ended up not making that film. Then he met me years later after ’24' released and told me about 'Kerry On Kutton' and asked me if I would like to play Jyoti? And I said yes! When I heard the narration I really enjoyed it and felt if I'm enjoying listening to the script then people would definitely enjoy watching the film. And I was signed on!! I play a sixteen year old school girl in a small town in Uttar Pradesh. She is a rebel like the boys and uses her charm to get what she wants. Once her mind is set on something she makes sure she gets it by any means possible. The thing that attracted me to play Jyoti was that she is so different from me as a person and I had never met or known a girl like that in my life. It was a challenge!

This is just the beginning… I don't consider myself successful yet. I feel my journey has just begun. Moving forward, I am looking forward to doing films which have a good story and a strong script. My long term professional goal is to do films that go down in history so that I'm remembered and immortalised for the years to come. However, an alternate career is very important. I feel that no matter how good you are at your skill and no matter how hardworking you are, there is always a slim chance that things might not work out. In that case you should have a plan B. For me that plan B is Advertising.''
