IBFW STYLIST NISHANKH SAINANI

— Jasmeen Dugal

Hailing from Nagpur, Nishankh Sainani graduated in Fashion Design and Technology from Hamstech College of Fashion and did his post-graduation in Fashion Psychology from London College of Fashion. Since, he has been designing, fashion curation, styling, brand management and design consulting in Mumbai. Over to the official stylist of India Beach Fashion Week.

''I have my own label, 'Nishankh Sainani'. And I've spent four years as Head Fashion Curator and Design Consultant of a leading fashion platform, an opportunity entrusted to me by Amit Bhardwaj, Nikhil Hedge and team; it was the most memorable phase of my career. The creative bug bit me in childhood because I never liked anything which was simple or too normal!! I like things that are out of the box and unique, and as time passed I learnt through practical experience that a designer is incomplete without a stylist. To narrate the story of the beautiful ensembles showcased, a stylist plays an integral important role; the stylist conveys the narrative, the concept and the inspiration behind the collection. This really pulled me towards becoming a stylist…

Styling a show, as I said, is narrating the story behind the collection and adding your own element to it to make the collection look stunning on the runway, for the guests to have a great time and enjoy the showing. We have to keep in mind that it cannot become monotonous. There can be a lot of variations — one can go all out to convey the theme. I always believe that one can really experiment in styling and change the feel of the show 360° which I intend to do during this season of India Beach Fashion Week. A lot of new things shall be on my platter and the styling will leave guests in awe! Basically, it the look gets pulled together when the Designer and Stylist work in consonance as a team for the show… and the outcome is always worth it!

Speaking of trends, a lot of runway shows are broadcasted real time and models appear instantly on Instagram. So styling has become crucial. Most of the designers rely on styling to enhance their collection in their shoots, previews and shows because the reach is growing by the hour, by the minute. So I take it as my penultimate responsibility to ensure that the designer's collection gets broadcasted real time on various social media platforms, and looks its best and unique. Since the reach is humongous the stylist also gets huge exposure!!

Speaking of which, in Fashion there's no “Know-it-all." There's always an opportunity to explore, improvise, enhance and modify your work. What I have realised is that you keep working and you keep learning… you just can't stop. Our Fashion industry is the fastest moving industry amongst all and we all have to get with it. Trends change, seasons change so one should be good at fashion forecasting too! Lastly, the best piece of advice I have for someone who is looking to break into the industry is to keep your patience high, your feet on the ground and continuously work on yourself. It's the talent in you which is going to get you success so keep working hard and never give up1 It's okay to take a short break but bounce back much stronger!"
