IBFW DESIGNER NIKHITA MANGESHKAR

— Jasmeen Dugal

From MicroBiology to Fashion Design, Nikhita Mangeshkar is looking forward to the debut of her label at India Beach Fashion Week. In conversation with her!

''I was born and brought up in the city of dreams, Mumbai. As you know, this city has its way of giving you different opportunities in life. When I was a little girl I was in love with Science as a subject, especially Biology, and I chose to graduate in Microbiology but after spending three years in the laboratory I realized I'm too outgoing to sit in the lab for the rest of my life!! Now, Fashion has always been a part of me, and even when studying Microbiology, my professors would appreciate my styling and designing instead of my grades!

So after completing my Bachelors' degree and giving it much thought, I decided to get a second degree in Fashion Design from Raffles Design International. Fashion school was extremely hectic but this is where I realized how much I loved my work and creating experimental garments was something I looked forward to! Having said that, there must be a balance. The challenge lies in creating garments that are not only a reflection of your creativity but are also wearable. That being said, I also feel that to be a commercially successful designer in today's day and age you need newness in the design aesthetic. This is an ever-growing industry with so much competition. You need to bring something new to the table to make your mark!!

Speaking of India Beach Fashion Week, I've been following it since a few years now! This has been a great platform for many talented designers. So when I had to decide on how I want to launch my own label, India Beach Fashion Week was my first choice. It is a dream come true to be selected to showcase my collection here! Titled ‘Amaryllis' the collection is all about hidden strength within feminine softness of today's woman. The collection has been designed for today's urban girls so the silhouettes are comfortably simple yet edgy and the palate is a mix of pastels and vibrant hues with beautiful floral motifs hand embroidered onto the garments!

On the day of the showing the three things I absolutely cannot do without are perfectly fitting garments because this is a reflection of a lot of hard work; a positive attitude that the show will go well since I’m a huge believer of the law of attraction; and last but not the least, I need my family and friends to be there to support me as I am extremely nervous about the debut of my label. I am also looking forward to the vibe of Goa! This is one city that calms your nerves and gets you relaxed even in the most stressful situations.  So that's what I'm looking forward to other than the show!!''
