FOREST ESSENTIALS WELLNESS WORKSHOP

— Jasmeen Dugal

It's midnight. I’m lying in bed, tired. I should turn out the lights, but instead, I am typing at the speed of lightning on my laptop while my smartphone is pinging. I've just finished responding to emails and now, I'm on social media.

''Why don't you sleep?'' my parents ask. ''You need to wake up early.''

''I'm not tired,'' I lie.

''Why don't you read a book? You bought so many and you haven't begun any?!''

They have just tapped into a deep-seated anxiety about my inability to disconnect, de-stress and 'relax'.

Physically, mentally, digitally, I refuse to stay still. When I'm not completing assignments, I'm talking shop with potential clients or on social media. My demanding career, family responsibilities and social life keeps me on my toes—and when I return home—I'm unable to ‘disconnect'. So when Ayurvedic doctor, author and certified stress management consultant Taruna Yadav and wellness author Vasudha Rai came together at Forest Essentials, Aerocity to help us learn simple acts of mindfulness and easy- to- practice asanas and mudras to alleviate stress — it was a priceless opportunity I did not want to miss!

The wellness session began with Dr. Taruna Yadav explaining that leading fast-paced lives has resulted in more and more people suffering from anxiety and stress, often characterised by feeling run down, an inability to relax, lack of motivation, restlessness, anger or frustration, and while these symptoms impact our mental and emotional well-being, they may lead to ailments like migraines, weight gain or loss, high blood pressure, exhaustion, insomnia. So, how do we keep stress at bay? ''Ayurveda offers insight on characteristics that make each of us unique. These are due to one of three bio-energies or Doshas in our bodies which govern physical and mental wellbeing'' she explained, following which she explained the inherent characteristics of each Dosha and how we should balance it. I know I am going back to her for a personal consultation; this could be the beginning of my wellness journey.

''Summer is about heat so we need to add cooling ingredients to our diet'' she added. ''Basil seeds soaked in water coriander water, herbal or fennel tea is good. You can add rose essential oil to the bathing tub. Body polishers are really good for summer skincare.'' Vasudha Rai then shared interesting tips and mudras to alleviate stress during work hour. ''When you're stressed at work, one simple thing you can do at work, or anyplace else, is head-down feet-up. No, this is not what you're thinking. Just put your head down so that is below your knees with the crown facing the floor and shake your head. The blood rushes to your head and it instant refreshment — almost like a headstand! Once you're home, stressed and tired after a hard day's work, simply lie down and lift your feet up so its against the wall. This will really relieve all the water retention! This is also great for those of you who wear heels all day!!''

My takeaway from this wellness workshop by luxury Ayurveda brand Forest Essentials? Balance is not perfectly 50–50. It could just require a small tweak to make your fast-paced lifestyle more manageable. Hey it's just been a few days that I've been practicing Vasudha's de-stress tips and it seems to be working. Try it, friends. And if it brings you less stress and more peace of mind, stick with it!
