FOOTWEAR FARE: AUTUMN WINTER 2014-15 TRENDS

— Meher Castelino

Are footwear styles getting more sensible after creating trends for towering designs that left the viewers guessing about the wearer’s real height, wonders MEHER CASTELINO. At the Autumn Winter 2014-15 fashion fairs held in Europe styles from Moscow, Paris, Spain, Dusseldorf and Italy revealed a line-up of smart but practical shoes that will be seen on the racks at the end of the year. Divided into segments that are now a part of every woman’s wardrobe, footwear fashion changes as quickly as that for the clothes so that the two can move in unison through the seasons.

THE WEDGE WAY
Wedges are still the most easy and practical way to add height to the lady. Anna Chapman has them with side zippers and peep toes and look like booties. G. Sel keeps them strappy and in white with lots of buckles to add glitter and interesting touches. Silvian Heach goes totally sporty but with really high six-inch cork wedges that end up in sensible black lace-up shoes. Dress them up or down and they can take you through the day and into the night. Wedges look good with trousers, jeans or casual skirts when in neutral colours. They can go formal in metallic with a dash of glitter.

STYLISH STILETTOS
Thank goodness the lovely feminine stilettoes are back in a big way in the conventional 1950’s look with heels that give elegance to the ankles and legs and give the lady a graceful walk instead of a hobble. Bizuu and Hauber offer the neutral black variety with pointy closed toes. Elie Tahari has a pair which is in gold with wraparound buckled cords for more support and will look great on the Red Carpet. Everyday by Tamary styles them with pointed metallic tips with red as the striking colour. Raybalko’s nude peep toe stilettoes will match with most dresses while Salsa’s strappy brown sandals with protective uppers will be comfortable. United Nude has designed red patent leather Mary Jane stilettoes with a black strap or has a style with multi-colored straps that criss cross on the feet so that they can be worn with more ensembles and can be extended into a longer life for the pair. Young Couture by Barbara Schwarzer presents a simple white ankle strap design with a good support for the toes. Stilettoes are so elegant and feminine they look fabulous with any outfit and are a “must have” with saris, lehenga-cholis and kurtas.

BEAUTY IN BOOTIES
The Autumn Winter Season does call for some stylish boots but designers have kept them feminine. Ash has the conventional ankle length side zippered chunky heel style in mid brown. MET offers them as towering stiletto heels balanced with platforms and front lace up uppers. Monari’s chunky heels with cut-outs at the heels has a laced up pointed toe style, which is ankle high to make a stylish statement. These boots are sure made for walking, but they are best worn with clothes that can match the slightly heavy nature of the shoes like coats, jackets, and winter woollens. Of course if you want to make an unconventional fashion statement then team them with a chiffon halter gown and get noticed.

CHUNKY HEEL PLATFORMS
Platforms and chunky heels go together to create interesting fashion directions. Makhmudov Djemal designs them in white with broad straps for uppers and for the ankles in a peep toe style. Max et Moi’s chunky heels are in brown suede pumps, which are in the popular style or in black with a metallic chunky high heel and peep toes. Paul and Joe Sister’s printed platforms in a Mary Jane style look great for casual wear with trousers or skirts. This is a popular design option and looks good with day and evening wear as well as western and Indian clothes but it also all depends on the colour material and style to make it work.
