CHAMBORD: THE RENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURAL GENIUS

Let's go back in time to understand the nature of a partnership that promises huge potential for Udaipur and France. In April 2015 a partnership agreement was signed between Domaine National de Chambord and City Palace Udaipur managed by the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation [MMCF] with a vision to preserve living heritage and promote tourism to both regions — the consequence of a desire expressed by French Minister of Foreign Affairs Laurent Fabius and Indian PM Narendra Modi. The agreement identifies four objectives: promotion of knowledge of the two regions | sharing of knowledge in the field of conservation | joint communications to promote tourism to those destinations | development of joint projects on cultural festivals and tourism-related activities in India and France.

On the occasion of World Living Heritage Festival — held in March 19—24 2016 — organised by MMCF supported by Unesco India and Dronah Foundation in association with Chateau de Chambord France- School of Planning and Architecture Bhopal- Indian Heritage Cities Network I was honoured to witness Domaine National de Chambord and MMCF celebrating this collaboration with the inauguration of an exhibition titled 'Chambord. The Renaissance Architectural Genius At The City Palace. Udaipur. India' at Panorama Gallery- Ganesh Chowk- City Palace Museum where the ribbon was cut by ShriJi Arvind Singh Mewar Maharana Of Udaipur with HE The Ambassador of France to India Francois Richier and Jean D'Haussonville- GM- Domaine National de Chambord following which select guests present raised a toast with flutes of the finest champagne.

PS What I found really intriguing here was the Chambord Histopad — tourists can rent digital tablets to travel back in time to the Renaissance through augmented reality software!! It is designed in a fun interactive style to make the days of the Renaissance come alive for the general public as they explore the château and understand its history and collections of furniture and art which are described through simple text and high definition images so users can zoom in on interesting works. From a tourism point of view.. the texts have been translated into 12 languages! Definitely something invaluable! The study of this histopad was followed by a heritage trail of City Palace and the city and then workshops and brainstorming seminars were held on different aspects of living heritage and conservation in subsequent days… the outcome of which holds huge potential for Udaipur. More on that in my next series of articles!
