In 1964, Pushpawati Khaitan founded Nari Shiksha Kendra to provide women of the local community with sustainable income. These women made pure hand-ground masalas and traditional pickles and chutneys, from heirloom recipes using fresh, quality ingredients; proceeds from the sales, was their primary source of income — an initiative which will get them out of the poverty line with dignity and provide better education and health for their future generations.

 

Fifty years later, nothing has changed. The ingredients are pure and the techniques hand-crafted. But today, these pickles, dips, spices and salad dressings has a national presence in over two hundred stores and retails online. Intrigued, I logged online https://aamrabynsk.com/ and ordered 'Mango Cardamom Chutney', 'Sweet Chilli Peanut Dip' and 'Sweet Sour Green Pickle Dip'. The package arrived with a note, ''our courtyard is abundant with the aromas of chopped chillies, sun-dried mangoes and freshly roasted spices. We hope some of that magic has been transported to you in this bottle.'' Since I love mangoes, I opened the bottle of mango cardamom chutney — the oil-free, shredded raw mango blended with cardamom and fennel seeds, preserved naturally in earthen jars, was so, so sumptuous when I spread it on crackers and took a bite! It immediately brought back childhood memories of Kolkata streets where I had relished raw mango slices drizzled with masala. Sigh! Bye, bye crackers-and-cheese… this is my go-to for cravings! PS you won't get this just anyplace — it was crafted using a heirloom family recipe from Agra! I cant wait to try the pickles and dip next!!

 

I highly recommend Aamra. It has a two-pronged benefit; the products are natural, handcrafted, use sumptuous heirloom recipes and the sales empower women with sustainable employment and contribute towards the eradication of poverty. In Bengali, Aamra means 'we’ and, at Nari Shiksha Kendra, it is all about 'Aamra, women’.
